Game for heat-up!!!

Its really amazing how environment can bring changes into a person. Just till yesterday we all were(at least i was) so confused(as usual the case is with me) about what to study and what not to study(which again is the case with me)as our minors were going on.

But thankfully the exams our over and all of us are now busy with Parivartan-our college fest. The heat is gearing up and now we are also getting the feel of it(despite of the chilly winds of my lovable delhi). While the pari team(as they are popularly called)are having lunchless lunchtims and sleepless nights, the entire class is so engrossed in the preparations.

But one thing that is so very special about us is that we all are working as a team and we all are loving it.In fact I am glad doing so many things that I m doing for the first time.In fact I think we all are!!!!

the deeper side-1″ The road musnt bend”

And so I enter yet another phase

hopefully, coz its impossible to exactly know know

the past should be a friend

but now the road musnt bend.

Those days are back again

where theres hope everywhere.

I fell i possess the midas touch,

ok, its still quite a bit if not so much

am i on her mind,

or am i just hallucinating.

in either case, it binds

coz i need to know which side i am.

plz gimme hints to let me find.

The tables have turned,

and now its time for him to be scared.

for all my goodness thats wat ive earned.

do i have some power,

or am i just close.

is it that time, again that hour,

when the past subconciously wants to be the present again.

but now, like i said, the road musnt bend

Spornado 2008 - The ‘Tornado’ of Sports!

The New Year of 2008 brought with it the first ever edition of Spornado – “the Tornado of Sports”, a sports event between DMS, IIT Delhi and DoMS, IIT Roorkee. Spornado ’08 was an initiative taken by the students of both management schools much in the same vein as some of the other more famous bi-college annual sports events. If the proposed rationale behind the sports event was to help promote cooperation, understanding and relations between the students from two premier institutes, it did not quite limit itself to just that. The spirit of competitiveness and a will to win on the part of both the colleges ensured quite a close encounter.

IIT Roorkee with its well maintained infrastructure offered to host the 3 day event from the 11th to the 13th of January 2008. A total of 63 students took the 3 hour train journey from Delhi to Roorkee, to be welcomed by an equally enthusiastic contingent from the DoMS. The event was sponsored by BSNL and consisted of 13 of some of the major team indoor and outdoor games including cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis and many more.

The events were slotted to take place over a 3 day period and points were assigned to each of the events. The team with the most number of accumulated points at the end was to be named as the Spornado champion for the year 2008.

Day 1 was kicked off by the volleyball event. Being the first event of the meet, it was contested in full vigour by the teams from both institutes. The team from DMS, led by Bhaskar Mowgli though won convincingly by a 2 sets to nil margin thereby setting the tone for the rest of the events. 30 points to Team DMS!

Next up was the snooker and pool event. Being an indoor event, both the games were worth 20 points each. The format was such that 8 players of both colleges would take part in a knockout system where the player winning the events would ensure point for his/her respective team. Sachin Dhawan from DoMS won both the events quite comfortably but a special mention for Shyam George from DMS who reached the finals of the snooker event and the semis of the pool event. Sidharth Sarda reached the finals of the pool event exhibiting the team strength of the DMS team. However, with the format as it was, it was 40 points in the bag for Team DoMS.

Another indoor game of carom was also played on the first day. The team from DoMS took the event 4 to 1 in a stunning display of carom play. 25 points to the team led by Sachin Ambade.

We then moved to the synthetic courts of lawn tennis – 3 singles and 2 doubles matches scheduled to decide the better team at the game. Led by Pulkit Bhandari and Manu Anand, TEAM DMS won the encounter quite comfortable by a 3-1 margin with the last doubles not even necessary.

The football ground was the place to be in the evening for the event of the day. In what was quite a close encounter and marked by excellent team play on the part of both teams, the team from DoMS just sneaked in by a margin of 1 goal to nil and bagged 30 points. In what was a charged up atmosphere in the cold of the January winter, one and all witnessed a fast paced game. Just a pity there couldn’t be more goals but a good match for the spectators never the same. Job well done by Vaibhav Kesri and team!

End of the first day of action saw Team DoMS inch ahead by virtue of the football event and lead by 95 points to 60.

January 12th was the second day of the event. So much had already transpired over the first day but a lot was still there to look forward to. The day began with the badminton event. Both team had some big names in their teams – people with achievements and distinction in the game at various levels. In what was the most pulsating event of the meet so far, the team from DMS triumphed 5-3. All the games were very keenly contested and a thrill to be a part of.

The big one – CRICKET was next at the cricket maidan. With both teams desperate to win, it was going to be a close one. DoMS won the toss and the team led by valuable contributions from Trushin Barai, their captain and Sachin Dhawan, the team notched up 120 for 7 wickets. DMS in reply could muster 108 in their 16 overs despite a good effort by the middle order. A 12 run defeat for the team DMS meant that they trailed by 125 points to 90.

Girls basketball was next and in quite a fascinating battle of excellent defensive play, IITR DoMS girls edged their counterparts from IIT Delhi by one point.

Day 3 of the event was really being looked forward to now – the team from DMS despite losing the big ones still had a chance to life the tournament if they won every event on the 3rd day. It was quite a task though.

The first event of the day was Squash. Racket sports being a forte of the team from DMS, it was expected to be a cake walk. And so it was. A 4-1 scoreline and 25 points to boot; DMS was still fighting!

The Chess results came out next. The event was staged over the 3 days and the DMS Chess team edged out that from DoMS by 1 point to take victory.

The TT Tables were the subsequent centres of attention. With so much at stake and Team DMS still fighting, all eyes were on the proceedings. Sidharth Sarda set the ball rolling with a fine win in the first game. But despite the best efforts made by the rest of the team they could not pull it off. A loss by 4 to 1 meant that Spornado was going to be a lost cause.

The basketball event for boys though academic was still going to be fun. There wasn’t a lot to play for but it did not look that one bit. In what was the best game of the tournament in front of a huge crowd, Team DMS won. A nail biting finish it was with a victory margin of just one point. Srikar Surampudi was the star hitting as many as 27 points including a game cruncher to pull it off for DMS.

The final analysis said, 170 points to 165, the closest it could have got. DoMS had won, on their home turf. DMS though did not disgrace themselves one bit, putting up a brave fight in all games especially on the last day. On another day, with better refereeing, maybe they could have emerged winners. But winners they still were, for the way the team was there for each other, for the sportsmanship they exhibited and for the way they played. Kudos to the supporting cheer squad which went all around the sports facility supporting all the players! A pat on the back for the players from both colleges who took time out from their schedules in support of an event which could turn out to be one of the events to look out for in the years to come. A special mention also to the organizing committee at DoMS led by Trushin Barai for the hospitality extended and for managing the scale of operations. As was said in the final prize distribution chaired by dignitaries from BSNL, the spirit, shown by all through the event, keeps everyone in good stead for the game we call Life. In amidst, the sweat and the toils, the joy and the sadness, the winners and the second bests, the camaraderie, the sportsmanship, the love prevailed – the love for The Game!

When Govardhan came visting……..

The best part of being in an IIT is that you are right in the midst of an academic hub which serves as a platform to interact with eminent personalities from different walks of life-political,industrial and Media. But what if you find yourself interacting with an ecletic gathering of the shooting stars of today-You would find no words to express yourself and that is exactly what happened on January 20th at IIT Delhi.

This is the day when Gordon Brown(Or Govardhan as he is known by UK settled Indians) came visiting to have a discussion on India-UK entrepreneurship. And he was accompanied by Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal. And at the centre stage was a contingent of British and Indian Entrepreneurs-the icing on the cake was the presence of the Virgin Group Billionaire-Hold your breath-Richard Branson. And among the ensemble of prominent persona were CMD Bharti Sunil Bharti Mittal ,Wipro Technologies ex-CEO Vivek Paul,Beer Baron Karan Billimoria and Jet Chairman Naresh Goyal. The event was hosted by Prannoy Roy,renowned media figure.
Gordon Brown spoke on entrepreneurship in the UK and India. He stressed on the importance of Angel networks that would provide venture capital to youth. Mr Kapil Sibal added that India and Britain could build on an empire of ideas which was the need of the 21st century. The entire session was captivating and enriching as many insights were shared by different enrepreneurs as they talked about their success stories, education, their ventures, risk taking and encouraged all students present to make use of the huge opportunity presented to them in terms of being a part of the IIT fraternity. In Prannoy Roy’s words”We have a billion dollars on stage and a future billion dollars sitting in front of the stage”.
Among the personalities present in the audience were Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin,BCG India Chairman Arun Maira and Caparo Group founder Lord Swaraj Paul.I was one of the few lucky people who got a chance to interact face to face with Arun Sarin and Lord Swaraj Paul. What struck me was that both of them were such down to earth people. The 5 minutes I spent talking to them were perhaps one of the most inspring moments of my life. Lord Swaraj Paul urged us to “be the best in whatever you do and to love what you do.”Mr Sarin had one piece of advice:”when in doubt….dont listen to what your head or what your heart tells you…listen to your gut feeling”
I shall treasure these words and the autographs I took…….this is perhaps one of the fondest memories of DMS that I shall cherish.

Natural conditioning

Human behaviour is definitely a mystery till now and it is always so enticing to study. But the living behaviour is even so more difficult to comprehend. And the importance of conditioning cannot be overseen while studying living behaviour. In a certain monastery in Thailand whose name I had never known, the monks breed tigers!!!(of all the animals). They (of course the monks-not the tigers) belong to that Buddha school of thought which considers that the behaviour (of living) is pre-dominantly influenced by the food that we eat. So by making the tigers eat green food they are trying the tigers to forget their devilish instincts. But what makes me wonder is that is it really so possible to inhibit our natural behaviour which includes our natural desires to be overtaken by just conditioning. Well if it is so, then I guess we all can definitely be much better human beings and be humane instead

Two worlds

Of late,I never muster enough courage to look at the map of India….why you may wonder….
The reason is quite simple…….You mark Delhi with a dot and mark Trivandrum with another dot and join the two
and viola!the line you have drawn covers almost the entire stretch of our country.and this reminds me how far away I am from my home town,Trivandrum. Now for those who are not familiar with God’s own country,I must mention that it’s an awesome place. No…I am not part of the promote tourism campaign.I merely want to compare and contrast what life down south or madrass(as the popular notion is).

Brrr….i can barely blog………it’s so cold.Back home the temperature remains steady at 25 degrees all round the year.Yes my poor south Indian soul is crying aloud! As for food….well lets say Delhi is Roti,Dal and Paneer.I really do miss the typical Southy cuisine-steaming hot idlis drenched with spicy sambhar. My friends here did attempt to cheer me up by taking me to ‘South Indian’ Hotels….but I decry then to be outrageous imitations. And last but not least…lifestyles….the Delhi lifestyle here is zooming at supersonic speed.I wonder if people would take a second off their busy schedules..to take a deep breath and say…I am glad to be well and alive.

Every time I look about the plush greenery at IIT around me…it brings memories of home back…Yes I miss my home.Which makes me ponder…was it worth it?Coming all this distance…and then images flash around me….of the all the hard work we put in at DMS,of the ocean of knowledge swimming around us,waiting to be gulped,of the night-outs(I am a self-proclaimed lounge-o-maniac),of all the seminars and workshops we have, life at hostel and the never-ending assignments,of Our upcoming Bfest Parivartan; and then I realize,I have fallen in love with DMS ! and a voice inside me says…..Yes the distance was definitely worth it.

Semester Blues!

I often wonder what I like the most about DMS..the lectures scheduled at 8 in the morning inspite of the inhuman temperatures in winters or the oh-so-delectable lunches at Palak..jokes apart…what we all would really pine for when we pass out(god forbid…does anybody really wanna leave this place?) are the night-outs in the lounge…the brainstorming sessions for various events on campus…the night-canteen during exams…the mimickery sessions(there are quite a few good mimics in class..intense competion there!)..the coffee at nescafe post 12 midnight..the list is endless…

With Parivartan round the corner the campus is buzzing with energy…the enthusiasm is infectious..with the delhi temperature touching all time lows…we too are breaking new grounds with novel excuses to avoid course-work(only in our minds though..sigh)…Parivartan, our annual business festival heralds the beginning of many exciting events to follow…welcome change..welcome Parivartan 2008..

Ohhhh English…..

I have often wondered about the formalities in our life. And why do we have to be so particular about sticking to the formalities. Now before I start drifting to the perceived boring world of philosophy and abstraction-let me make myself clear that I am talking about the great English language.

The English language is great in itself and I have often wondered about the great capabilities that we possessed that we have successfully learned the language (however little we know). So its still unknown why do we have to use the silent words when all they do is to remain silent. And how capable we are so as to differentiate the sound of cream and ice-that is the different sounds of c in two different words. Also the need of w and v when actually they produce the same sounds. Hats off to the English teachers that we all were blessed with during school who have successfully taught us this great mysterious language.

ohhhh…. MAN

The recent incidents of misbehaviour at the New Year eve brought us face –to-face with the ugly side of the Indian society. And the fact that on a poll next day most men thought that if young women are going to late night parties they should be prepared for such confrontations.

But the fact is that freedom for women in India is probably the costliest in all terms. Women esp in India are still dominated, controlled and subdued. Men have always tried to and still seek to dominate women. The women do not say that they are less than men but it is men who continuously make them feel so. In fact the Asian men are one of the worst scorers on the behaviour metric and I think I will not face major opposition on this issue. And I would like to stress that times have changed nothing. The Indian woman is and will be constrained at least in near future. And plllsssss we do not need one or two stars to disapprove this. What we need is a star in each one of us.

ohhhh delhi schools

With March this year, we will again witness the mad rush for school admissions and of-course some amazingly new rules for the same. In fact this year parents who are single, do not smoke or drink or who have married inter-caste or inter-religion (even better) can hope for higher scores. The schools say that they want children with different backgrounds to mingle with each other. But my question is that whether ensuring our child’s admission to a particular school, can we actually ensure their better personality? Of course the Indian parent is a classic example who views their children as their extension and love to boast about their children. But even as the mad rush for school admissions continues. We actually need to analyse whether it is fully justified.
