Jodhaa-Akbar

Jodhaa-Akbar has been in the news recently and that too for the wrong reasons. No,I am not here to validate the historical accuracy of the movie. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the central character,Jodha…did she really exist? There is no reference of her in the Akbarnama and historic records say that she certainly wasnt Akbar’s first wife.

It was with a lot of mis-givings that I viewed this movie and to my pleasant surpise found myself completely swept off my feet;it struck me….this is perhaps one of the finest pieces of art I have ever seen. What I had witnessed was sheer poetry on celluloid.
This epic romance unfolds slowly and subtlely-the marriage between jodha and akbar was a strategic alliance but what stands out is that it was the confluence of two very different cultures.Something that deserves specific mention here is the emperor’s tolerance towards other religions and this is perhaps the movie’s central theme-harmony and unity among people.
The aesthetic appeal of the movie is worth mentioning; it’s soul stirring music, the splendour of the mughal court and the architecture is a definite treat on the eyes.

Let us let art be.We must learn to appreciate art for what it stands far rather than mar a masterpiece with controversy.
