GIFT paper presentation on resilience
The GIFT(Global Institute of flexible systems management) had conducted its annual paper presentation contest on 27th october,2007 at the vishwakarma bhawan,DMS,IIT-delhi.The topic for the paper presentation was ‘Building a resilient organization’.It was open to students and for wrking professionals having a minimum work experience of 2 years.It witnessed a good participation from top B-Schools like IIM-B,IIM-C,FMS,MDI,IIFT etc.A total of 31 entries had been recieved out of which 7 teams had been shortlisted for presentation.
The event had the priviledge of having Prof.P.K.Jain (Lecturer of finance,DMS,IIT-Delhi),Mr.S.B.Khare(D.D.G. restructuring unit,BSNL) and Prof S.S.Yadav(H.O.D.,DMS,IIT-Delhi).
The event started with the opening address by Prof P.K.Jain who stressed on the relevance of the topic of the paper presentation in todays market which has been transformed from a sellers market to a highly competitive market.He is also a founder member of the GIFT society and hence he spoke about the history as well as future plans of the GIFT society.
This was followed by an address by Mr.S.B.Khare who talked about the role of leaders in todays time in decision making and to empower the people with the capability of the same.
The addressing session was ended by Prof.S.S.Yadav who is also a founder member of the GIFT society.He gave the example of the revival of the part-time MBA course at DMS,IIT-Delhi to exemplify flexibility.
The judges for the contest were Mr.A.K.Garg (chief chemist,ONGC) ,Mr.Siddhardh tiwari (co-ordinator, google) and Mr.Shyam sethi who had many years of industry experience.
There were 7 teams in all who were very excited and were eagerly looking forward to their chance.The first team was from FMS which focussed their presentation on resilience and dimensions of flexibility.They gave live examples from the fire services and Tata administrative services to exemplify the flexibilty and resilience in the organizations.
The second team was from SBI Capital Markets LTD. and focussed their presentation on environmental effects and evolution vs. crisis.They explained the technique of HIPL matrix(high input low probability). The third team which won the frize prize was from NITIE and presented the scenario from supply chain management perspective.They stressed on the day-to-day management process and the tracking and information flow.The fourth team which was awarded the second prize was from S.P.Jain,Mumbai and they focussed on the horizontal approach by exemplifying a risk management tool called elixia which they had employed to track the risk levelin IT company-Wipro.The fifth team was DMS,IIT-Delhi which ha their presentation on the open source software license and their application to e-governance.The sixth team was from IMI and presented the case study from NTPC.The seventh team was again grom DMS,IIT-Delhi and focussed on resilience in the Indian automotive industry.
The program ended with a beautiful note on flexibility by Prof.Sushil and insights about the various presentations by the judges.It was indeed an extremely fruitful and enriching learning experience for the students and all of us are eagerly looking forward to many more such events.
